Karachi: The sudden discovery of a road in Karachi’s rural suburbs with an open well midway on its path has amazed the Karachiites.

The video clip showing the never-before-seen road has gone viral on social media.

Social media users called on the government to immediately place warning signs to let the unsuspecting motorists in the area about the presence of an open well on the road.

The video doing rounds contains a commentary from an unidentified local resident who saluted the engineers who constructed the road with a well right on its path.

The video shows that the area residents placed small size rocks to forewarn motorists about the presence of the well on the road. But the rocks could easily be missed by a driver during the night.

After the video was widely shared on social media platforms, the District Council in Karachi, which looks after the development of the city’s rural outskirts, issued a clarification.

The spokesman for the District Council said the road project having the well didn’t belong to the council or the Sindh government.

He said the council or the provincial authorities had nothing to do with the road in question as the same had been built by private real estate developers.

He said the road had been built by a local property developer to facilitate his upcoming housing project. He said the social media users should refrain from harming the reputation of the council or the Sindh government on account of this road.

The spokesman said the government-deputed engineer of the area union council had also issued a video statement to clarify the situation.

In the video statement, the engineer said that he didn’t know the identity of the private builders who built the road.

He said the government authorities or the elected representatives of the area had nothing to do with the road.

The concerned social media users said the relevant civic and government agencies shouldn’t allow the private real estate developers to build roads in such a manner as the road construction was the prerogative of the state only.

They urged the government to immediately take the due safety measures to secure the artery in question and also take to task the officials whose negligence led to the construction of such a road, which could endanger the lives of its users.
