Alexandra, a beloved 7-year-old canine, embarked on a 15-hour journey with her owner from Kuwait to Dubai to undergo a critical operation to remove a life-threatening brain tumour. With her fate hanging in the balance, prompt action was necessary. Fortunately, Modern Vet Hospital, the sole multi-specialty referral veterinary centre in the region, skilfully performed the surgery, resulting in a remarkable transformation for the canine.

Alexandra had been suffering from a plague of epileptic seizures since she was 3-years old. CT scans revealed a tumour that was causing severe pressure on her brain, and it was decided that surgery was the most effective option.

The surgery, known as a craniotomy for meningioma, was carried out at Modern Vet’s state-of-the-art hospital in Dubai. The operation consisted of accessing the spinal cord through the neck and removing a herniated disc to alleviate the pressure on the spinal cord.

Dr Roy Hassoun and Dr Rami Mdawar both highly skilled, experienced, and board-certified veterinary surgeons performed the brain surgery. The team utilised cutting-edge technology, including advanced imaging techniques to pinpoint and remove the tumour.

Despite the potential risks involved, the team at Modern Vet displayed determination to do everything in their power to help Alexandra; their triumph opening new avenues for treating neurological disorders as well as canine meningiomas not only in Dubai but also in the wider region.

According to Dr Mdawar, “The biggest challenges were to set up the anaesthesia protocol for brain surgeries and to open the skull and remove the tumour.”

The story of Alexandra is an incredible illustration of the strong link that exists between pets and their human companions. It emphasises the importance of access to high-quality veterinary care, which plays a significant role in safeguarding animal welfare globally.
