Sam Mullane (JGE) shot a final round of 73 over the Earth course for a three round total of 213, three under par to win the 2023 Jumeirah Golf Estates Men’s Amateur Open today (Sunday).

The 54-hole event is the penultimate qualifying tournament of the 2022 – 2023 Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) Men’s Order of Merit, in addition to an R&A supported World Amateur Golf Rankings (Men’s Division) qualifier.

The first two rounds were played over the Fire course and the final round today, over the Earth course.

20 year-old Mullane, started the day with a two shot lead from playing partners Joe Jones (Wales) and Daniel Butteriss (Eng).

A front nine holes of 39, was not what Sam needed in a crowded leaderboard.

Four birdies in five holes from the 11th re-established his lead.

He then doubled 16 after arguing with the mangroves on the right and the water short of the green.

He then finished par – par, getting down in two from 80 yards at the last to win by one shot from his elder brother 21 year-old Jay Mullane (JGE), who shot an equal best of the day 72.

Sam said at the conclusion of his round, ‘I was a bit scrappy today, but pleased to win. I had no idea where I was coming up the last, so I was relieved to sink my final putt on green 18 to win by the closest of margins from my brother.’

The Net Division was won by Daniel Butteriss (Eng), who plays out of Beaconsfield Golf Club, with rounds of 71, 65 and 77 for a three round net total of 213 and a three shot victory.

Stephen Wilson, Golf Operations Manager at Jumeirah Golf Estates, said at the presentation, ‘Congratulations to all the players and winners. Thanks must be given to our agronomy team for the condition of the golf course. We have had a great turnout and look forward to a bigger and better 2024 JGE Men’s Amateur Open.’
