The orthopaedic team at Dr. Sulaiman AlHabib Hospital in Dubai Healthcare City succeeded in restoring the ability of a 62-year-old patient who suffered from severe osteoarthritis of the left hip joint to move and walk normally.

Dr. Ahmed El-Bakoury, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with British and Canadian fellowships and the head of the treating medical team, explained that the patient had suffered from lower back and pelvic pain for more than two years and had previously been diagnosed with lumbar stenosis.

Dr. Ahmed El-Bakoury added that when examining the case, it was found that the patient had complete stiffness of the left hip joint. The patient was subsequently subjected to x-ray imaging, which showed severe osteoarthritis “wear and tear” of the left hip joint with extensive erosion of the surrounding cartilage. Dr. Ahmed El-Bakoury went on to say: After obtaining the necessary medical investigations, the decision was made to perform left hip replacement surgery under spinal anaesthesia.

The operation was completed successfully and the patient was able to walk several hours after the operation. The patient left the hospital two days following the hip replacement surgery. The patient was then able to walk normally without using any aids after one week of the operation and without the need for any painkillers.
