Fifth seed Coco Gauff of the United States produced a steady performance to overcome fellow American Madison Keys 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Tournament on Thursday. She will meet the top seed and World No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland in the semifinals.
Gauff looked assured in the first set, serving well and keeping Keys on the run. But Keys cranked up her game in the second set after losing her serve. She broke right back and kept the rallies tight. Gauff rode over a spell of inconsistency and wrapped up the set and match.
Her next Swiatek has a daunting 5-0 record against Gauff, who says she is not intimidated and will go out there swinging
“She’s playing at the top of her game. It’s going to be a challenge. It’s a good match-up just to see where I can improve on. You know, there’s no pressure for me. I’m just going to go out there swinging. Whatever happens, happens. You just have to go in believing you can win even when the odds seem stacked against you,” Gauff told reporters.
On Wednesday, Gauff and Jessica Pegula, who won the Qatar Open doubles title, crashed out of the Dubai event, losing to the Taipei pair of Latisha Chan and Chan Hao-ching.
