Andy Ogletree (US) shot a final round 73 for a 72 hole total of 281, seven under par, to win the $2.5 million International Series – Qatar on the Asian Tour by three shots.
24 year-old Ogletree (US), the 2019 US Amateur champion and winner of the International Series – Egypt in November last year, started the day with a five shot lead.
He went out in level par 36, then made a rare mistake with a double bogey seven on the par five 10th hole.
He stayed composed with the wind still blowing as it has all week, although it was the kindest day of the four, and hit the final eight greens in regulation, including a two putt birdie on the last to take the title and the first prize cheque of $450,000.
On completing his round he said, ‘Being able to play pain free is awesome. I have never lost my confidence and I am super pleased to be this week’s champion, especially as I was brought up playing in no wind. My goal today was to just hit greens, I stayed positive. I have worked so hard in the off-season and it has paid off. My number one goal this season is to win the Asian Tour Order of Merit.’
Ogletree is a man in-form in the world of golf. His last five starts internationally have been four top 10’s and two wins.
He now moves to the top of both the Asian Tour Order of Merit and the International Series Order of Merit.
In second place was Gunn Charoenkul (Thai) with a final round 68 to finish three shots back of the champion.
Only six players are under par for the 72 holes, with Sanghyun Park (Korea) shooting a best of the day 67 to finish tied eighth.
Regionally based players to complete four rounds include: Shiv Kapur (Ind) +9, Issa Abouelela (Am. Egypt) +12, Jeev Milkha Singh (Ind) +14 and Saudi AlSharif (Pro, KSA) +21.
Shiv Kapur’s next tournament is the Hero Indian Open at Delhi Golf Club on the DP World Tour, Thursday 23rd – Sunday 26th February, 2023.
The next tournament on the Asian Tour is the New Zealand Open presented by Sky Sport to be held at Millbrook Resort 2nd – 5th March, 2023.
