Marcel Siem (Ger) shot a final round four under par 68, for a 72-hole total of 274 to win by one shot the $2 million Hero Indian Open at DLF G&CC, New Delhi on the DP World Tour.

Siem (Ger), 42 years old, is a four-time winner on the DP World Tour, with his last win in 2014 at the BMW Masters in Shanghai, China. More recently he has played on the Challenge Tour where he won in 2021 in France. At the start of the week, he was 52nd in the Race to Dubai Rankings and 337 in OWGR.

After a few holes it became apparent that the champion would come from the final threeball of Yannik Paul (Ger), 37 year-old Joost Luiten (Ned) and Siem.

Sole bogey

Siem had an opening nine of 34 to tie Paul after nine holes. On the last nine Siem birdied 10, 11 and 15, with a sole bogey on hole 13 and with the remainder of the holes in par to win by just one shot from runner-up Paul.

This week Siem set a new 72 hole tournament record at DLF beating the 11 under par score set by Matt Wallace (Eng) in 2018.

Third round leader Paul, who led by five after 36 holes and by one with 18 to play, shot a two under par 70 with two birdies and no bogeys.

Siem is the first German to win on the DP World Tour in 2023 and takes home a first prize of $340,000.

On completing his round Siem, who made his 500th appearance on the DP World Tour two weeks ago, and has seven for seven cuts made this year, said, “After going through the Challenge Tour and Qualifying School, working really hard this is a second kick-start to my career. I hope there is more to come. This is right up there with my best moments. I moved the family to Mauritius just three weeks ago and this week means a lot because two years ago I wasn’t even sure if I could still compete on the DP World Tour and now I’m a winner again, come on!”

Dubai based Shiv Kapur (Ind), shot a final round of 77 to go along with his three previous rounds of 75, 73 and 69, for a 72-hole total of 294, five over par and a tied 48th place finish.

Only 24 players in the field of 67 players who made the cut, broke the par of 288 for 72 holes in ideal conditions with little or no wind, testament to the challenging course set-up.

In the season long Race to Dubai Rankings Siem moves up 44 places to eighth.

Top 10 players

Other movers and shakers following this week’s Hero Indian Open, include Paul upto ninth, Luiten up 11 places to 15th and Dubai based Thorbjorn Oleson (Den), winner last week at the Thailand Classic up one spot to fourth. The top 10 players, not already exempt, on the Race to Dubai Rankings at the end of the season will earn their 2024 cards on the PGA Tour.

The winner Siem also receives 9.29 Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points.

Next week is a free week on the DP World Tour. It returns to action March 9th – 12th with the Magical Kenya Open at Muthaiga GC in Nairobi where they will be playing for $2 million.
